Our first full day in Texas had us targeting Red Cockaded Woodpecker. A successful twitch ensued at WG Jones State Park. With the Cockaded we also saw Downy Woodpecker. Carolina Wrens and Chickadees, White eyed Vireos plus a few other species.
We also birded smoky Huntsville State Park – there were prescribed burns across the lake there – and saw some good birds. Pine and Yellow-throated Warblers, Wood Duck, Pied billed Grebes plus the highlight – Red headed Woodpecker.
One last spot and stop added good views of some charismatic species – White throated and Chipping Sparrows, BOD [bird of the day] Northern Parula [a warbler], Blue Grey Gnatcatcher and our first Bald Eagle – sadly a juvenile.
